Trump Credits Tariffs for India-Pakistan Truce: US President Donald Trump has again claimed that his mediation earlier this year prevented India and Pakistan from escalating into a full-blown war. This time, Trump said that tariffs were the reason the two nuclear-armed neighbors stopped fighting and reached an agreement a few months ago.

President Trump said from the Oval Office of the White House, "If I didn't have the power of tariffs, at least four out of seven wars would have already broken out... If you look at India and Pakistan, they were ready for a full-blown conflict. Seven planes were shot down." He said he used tariffs to prevent war.

Trump also said that tariffs not only helped the US gain economic benefits but also helped maintain peace. He said, "I don't want to say exactly what I said, but what I said was very effective... Not only did we earn hundreds of billions of dollars, but we also succeeded in maintaining peace, all thanks to tariffs."

India-Pakistan Border Dispute in May

India and Pakistan witnessed a military conflict in May this year, when India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist hideouts in Pakistan. This action was taken to avenge the killing of 26 civilians in the Pahalgam attack last year. Four days after the conflict, on May 10, a ceasefire was declared between the two countries, which India calls a bilateral decision, while Trump has consistently claimed that he brokered the deal.

Trump's Further Claims

Last week, Trump said that he had warned India and Pakistan that the US would break off trade relations if they continued the conflict. He said, "India and Pakistan were ready to clash. I called them both... seven of their planes were shot down. I said, 'If you do this, there will be no trade,' and I stopped the war. It raged for four days."

Trump also said that Pakistan's Army Chief Asim Munir praised his contribution in brokering a settlement with India. Referring to his recent meeting with Pakistan Army Chief and Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Trump said, "He (Munir) told the people present with us that this man (Trump) saved millions of lives because he stopped the war from continuing. That war could have been very terrible... I really liked the way he talked."
